Either a lot of Eugene area businesses have the same l blue box logo, or we have a Google+ problem. I’m talking about the default logo that Google uses for business listings, as well as the default cover photo. I’ve scanned many ‘Google My Business‘ listings in the Eugene area, and many haven’t taken the time to update their page, while others don’t even have a verified listing. It’s time to get our digital houses in order
Why should you care?
Google is king of search with a 68% market share, and thousands of local people are using the search giant to look up businesses listings. Whether you know it or not people are landing on your Google My Business listing page to find information . If you don’t upload photos and write a description you are missing out on a valuable branding opportunity.
Take the above Eugene business as an example. I don’t want to call anyone out, so I’ve blurred their name and address. The little gray shield with a check mark means that they verified the business with Google (more on that in a bit), but they have done nothing else. The business listing has been viewed 29,876 times! A missed opportunity to shine.
Compare that to the profile we built for Johnson Brothers Greenhouses, when we redesigned their website. We used inviting images that showcase the business with lots of color, creating a great first impression for customers discovering the business.
Here are a few steps all businesses should take to make their listings stand out. If you need assistance setting up your business contact us.
Verify your business
You will need to verify that you are the rightful owner of this business page, before you are able to make changes. Businesses that are verified have the gray shield with the check mark next to their logo. You will need a Google account to do this.
Upload a profile photo
Once verified you will gain access to a dashboard to manage your listing page. You will see the following image. Click on the box that says “Add profile photo”.
Google makes things a little difficult with the profile photo, in that they take your photo and put it into a circle. When prepping photos I make a 500×500 square image and then position my content into the center so it doesn’t get cut off on the sides.
Set your cover photo
Your cover photo is a chance to showcase your personality and brand. Google recommends using a 1080×608 sized image. It’s also a little difficult to update the cover photo, as there isn’t a clear place to do it from the listing management area. What I do is click the drop down menu on the left hand side of the dashboard and select Google+ page.
This will take you to your page, and if you hover your mouse over the cover photo you will be given the option to “Change Photo”.
Update business info
From the business listing dashboard click the red “Edit” box. From this page you should update your profile with your business categories (don’t just settle for one, put in all categories that pertain to your business), contact information, hours of operation, and an introduction paragraph. The introduction paragraph is a good opportunity to place keywords that you want to rank for with SEO.
